perception pescador 10 feature

This is a review of the Perception Pescador 10 sit-on-top kayak. The Pescador 10 is a versatile kayak that’s designed for general paddling as well as fishing.

perception pescador 10

Perception kayaks are renowned for being excellent value-for-money, and the Pescador 10 is one of the best sit-on-top kayaks in its price bracket. Designed for calm waters, it’s a lot of fun to paddle on local ponds and rivers. You can even take it out on the sea (though I’d stay out of the surf).

I loved the handling of the Pescador 10. It tracks straight as an arrow, is easy to maneuver in the shallows and feels super stable. With good storage and a comfortable seat, it’s ideal for long paddling days or even an overnight fishing trip.

In this Perception Pescador 10 review, I cover the key features of the kayak to help you decide if it’s the right boat for you.

Read on to find out more.

Perception Pescador 10 Pros and Cons

What I Like
  • Excellent tracking and maneuverability on calm water
  • Good storage options, including a dry storage well
  • Flexibility to add extra accessories for fishing or recreational use
  • One of the best short kayaks for large persons or heavy loads
  • Four handles make it easy to transport and can be used to secure the kayak with a padlock and chain
What I Don’t Like
  • Rod holders are poorly designed, but you can improve them with an extension tube
  • Not stable enough for standing kayak fishing (but most kayaks in this price range aren’t)

Is the Perception Pescador 10 the Right Fishing Kayak for You?

Angler kayaks fall into two camps. There are recreational kayaks that have extra features that make them suitable for fishing. Then there are the fully-decked-out fishing kayaks with all the mounts, rod holders and tackle space you could need.

The Pescador 10 falls into the first camp. This makes it a perfect kayak if you’ll be doing a bit of paddling and a bit of fishing, and want a boat that’ll suit both activities. The comfortable seat and storage also make it a good choice for longer trips.

It’s also a great option if you’re serious about fishing, but you can’t afford a kayak with all the bells and whistles. Perception also sells the Perception Pescador Pro 10 – a dedicated fishing kayak that’s equipped with a higher-spec chair and plenty of fishy features – but it’s a lot more expensive. With the Pescador 10, you get the same kayak body and performance with the option to retrofit the accessories you feel are most useful.

10-foot kayaks are the perfect size for navigating small rivers and creeks. You can also paddle the Pescador 10 on slow-moving rivers, lakes, ponds and calm coastal waters.

If you mostly kayak on large lakes or fast-moving water, I’d recommend looking at the 12-foot version of the Pescador. The extra length will help with tracking and keep you more stable in rough conditions.

Top Features of the Perception Pescador 10

The Pescador 10 is a great all-around kayak with key features that make it suitable for kayak fishing. In this section of the review, I’ll talk about its performance, build quality, storage options and ease of transport.

Excellent Performance for the Money

A kayak’s performance in the water can make or break your experience. Beginner kayakers often opt for a budget model, then get put off kayaking altogether when they find themselves paddling in circles.

If this sounds familiar, then you may want to sell off your current kayak and buy the Pescador. It’s a great performer in the water, being both stable and easy to maneuver. It didn’t feel tippy at all, even when I was accessing the storage areas. I felt confident enough to reach into the bow storage compartment and behind the seat without worrying that I’d end up in the water.

I had no issues with the tracking, which is saying something for a sit-on-top kayak. Even in light winds, the kayak steered straight. In terms of speed, it’s not going to win you any races, but it’s not the slowest boat you’ll come across.

For paddling on calm water, the Pescador 10 can hold its own against higher-priced models. When looking at sub-$600 kayaks, it’s one of the best of the bunch.

Robust and Roomy Design

Like most sit-on-top kayaks, the Pescador 10 is constructed from high-density polyethylene. This plastic is durable and resistant to bumps and scratches. It’s also UV-resistant, but I’d suggest storing it out of direct sunlight. A replaceable skid plate protects the stern from damage if you have to drag the boat a short distance to the water.

There are six scupper holes for drainage, located in the seat and footwell. The kayak doesn’t come with scupper plugs, but you can buy these separately. However, you may not need them as the cockpit largely stays dry, even when fully loaded.

Given its compact size, the Pescador 10 feels pretty spacious when you’re sitting on it. The seat is plenty wide enough and there’s a reasonable amount of legroom. Even taller users found it comfortable, which is saying something for a 10-foot kayak!

The kayak’s maximum capacity is 325 pounds, giving plenty of room for you and all your gear. This is much higher than other 10-foot kayaks, making it a good kayak for heavier paddlers or those with dogs on board.

Easy to Transport

The Pescador 10 has four molded-in handles, making it easy to transport. As the handles form part of the hull, there’s no risk of them detaching. You can also run a chain through them to lock up the kayak if you need to leave it for a while.

At 57 pounds, it’s a little heavier than other compact sit-on-top kayaks. You may find you need an extra pair of hands if you want to load it onto a roof rack. That said, as it’s a short kayak, you may be able to fit it in the back of your truck instead. The short length also makes it easier to find a place to store it at home.

The kayak is light enough for a single person to carry a few meters. For longer distances, I’d recommend using a kayak cart.

Kayak Fishing Features

Compared to other fishing kayaks, such as the Perception Pescador Pro 10, the Pescador 10 doesn’t have that many specific fishing features. However, there’s plenty to get you started and the capacity to customize your setup with extra items.

Molded-In Rod Holders

Two flush-mounted rod holders are located behind the seat for transporting fishing rods. On their own, they’re too large to hold your rods securely, but you can solve this issue by buying a pair of Rod-X Pro rod holders. These slot into the holes in the deck and extend the length of the rod holders, keeping your fishing rods secure when you’re on the move.

Gear Tracks for Mounting a Fish Finder

The Pescador comes with a pair of gear tracks for mounting a fish finder display unit, camera or other gadgets. Gear tracks make it easy to take accessories on and off, and allow you to adjust the angle and position of cameras and display units.

You could mount an additional rod holder on the gear tracks, though I’d be careful about how much weight you put through it.

Solo Mount Recess for Accessories

A handy mounting point in the center console allows you to add accessories to the deck without having to drill holes in the body of the kayak. This is ideal for phones and other accessories that you may not want to fix to the edge of the kayak (however securely they’re fastened!). The central console is also a great location to add a swivel rod holder.

Paddle Holder

Paddle holders let you stash your paddle while prepping your fishing gear or reeling in a catch. The Pescador 10 has one paddle attachment on the left side of the seat. It does the job fine, but it would be nice to have attachment points on both sides of the seat to give you a choice about where you clip your paddle.

Plenty of Space for Fishing Gear

The Pescador 10 packs a lot of storage for its size. Whether you’re heading out for a day’s fishing or a picnic downriver, there’s room for a cool box, spare clothes and more. At a push, you could even use it as a touring kayak for overnight trips.

Rear Open Storage

In the stern of the boat is a large storage area that’s ideal for a tackle box, milk crate or backpack. Whatever the shape and size of your gear, the attached bungee cords will keep it secure.

Secure Dry Storage for Clothes and Valuables

At the front of the kayak, there’s a large dry storage area accessed through a sealed hatch. It isn’t that easy to access when you’re on the water, but it’s a useful place to store spare clothes, valuables and anything else that you don’t want to get wet. The large hinged lid makes it easy to get stuff in and out.

Cup Holder

Hot coffee is essential for early-morning fishing trips or long days on the river. The molded recess in front of the seat keeps your drink safe and accessible.

All-Day Comfort

The padded seat and adjustable backrest make the Pescador 10 comfortable for long paddling sessions. If you want a more luxurious setup, you could replace the seat with a stadium-style chair (similar to the seat in the Pescador Pro 10). This is only really necessary if you’re planning on spending all day in the kayak.

A pair of quick-adjust footrests allows you to tweak the footpegs according to your leg length and personal preference. They’re easy to adjust but not the most robust part of the kayak, so don’t treat them too harshly.

What Users Say About the Perception Pescador 10

The Perception Pescador 10 is very popular with paddlers looking for a fishing kayak. As one Redditor says, it’s often regarded as the best fishing kayak in its price bracket.

Users praised the kayak’s comfort and performance. Tracking is often raised as a concern with this style of kayak, so it was good to see that other users praised this feature of the Pescador 10. It’s a notch above its competitors in this aspect of performance.

Short kayaks often don’t suit larger people as they have less space and a lower weight capacity. It was reassuring to see this comment from chubbyzook on the Pescador’s comfort:

Another thumbs up for the Pescador 10 comes from jnaegle. Normally, I wouldn’t recommend a 10-foot kayak to people over 6 feet tall, but he’s found this model to be comfortable and stable.

Conclusion

Finding a kayak that’s multi-functional, performs well on the water and doesn’t break the bank is a big ask. The Perception Pescador 10 delivers on all three counts and does a great job of striking a balance between the needs of recreational paddlers and fishing kayakers.

The compact size and weight make it easy to transport. Because of the large weight capacity, it’s one of only a few small kayaks that I’d recommend for larger persons. There’s space for all your kit, and the gear tracks and central mounting point give you options to attach fishing accessories, a GoPro or cup holder.

This is one of the best value-for-money kayaks on the market. Check it out today!
